Recondite's Daemmerlicht aka The Boogyman is Back.

I've admittedly being slacking on my personal music consumption. But man oh man I'm glad I caught wind of Recondite's (aka Lorenz Brunner) newest full length album Daemmerlicht. The music elements contained in these 52 minutes are so damn good I can barely listen to it at home by myself. It's that scary - frighting really.

The first track shares its name with the album and I can only equate it to catching a rumor of a beast that you haven't known since it used to manifest in your closet, under bed, in your head (sorry Mr. Hetfield I couldn't resist) in your formative years. The kind of fear that used to make you enter the debate "should I run to Mom & Dad's room or will the beast devour me the second I poke my head out of the covers".

It's not until Hoehlenichter & Der Steinmetz that you actually get a glimpse of your daemon. Big sweeping bass line as the floor beneath you goes with it around the 1:20 mark of the former. By the time you've gone through Von Der Kanzel you've been sucked into His layer.

The melodic fright levels run high for the second half of the album. Once Lorenz has you in his ether you're there and for me personally I did not want to leave. I've had tracks 7 - 10 on repeat now three times over. I can't get enough of music that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. It is truly the secret sauce that differentiates music that I very much like the shelf above. Explains my infatuation with the Chemical Brother's, particularly their live shows - scary stuff! But oh man makes me move in ways that makes my yoga instructor look stiff.

The album last two tracks Unten & Immer Da are so dramatic I can't tell if the listeners are supposed to feel like the girl in the Shape of Water - did we come to peace with the fact the scary thing is totally going to take us with it back to the depths of oblivion or are we having sexual relations with it. Either way it's a nice cherry on the dark chocolate three course dessert.

Anyway I highly recommend every sound Tom & Ed (the Chem Bros) have made but if you're like me and you've done that countless times over Daemmerlicht will be music to your ears. Not quiet chem bros-esque but deserves a listen and re-listen in its own right.

I do not actually have a yoga teacher.

Colonel Angus

This post has nothing todo with music, but because this is my blog...

"What's a Sybian?"
"Uhh, what do you mean what's a Sybian?!?"

Turns out that most people do not know something that I have been fairly enthralled with since I was a very young kid (thank you internet & Peter Acworth's entrepreneurial spirit). For you and everyone in the majority: A Sybian is a top-of-the-line vibrating sex toy made primarily for women.

The boy in me could not believe his eyes when he came across this truly one of kind art piece this summer. I filed it under "coolest thing I've seen on the internet all year" and tried to forget about it. Nope, woke up the next morning knowing that I had to go for it. I talked to the creator, John, and he informed that it was not for everyone. He needed to vet me. Would I put it to use, would I damage his creative reputation, would I show general respect towards the art piece and those who enjoy it? I'm glad he saw in me the deepest sincere interest and respect for all who come across this truly 'woah' center piece.

John dropped it off on playa for me this year at the BM camp I am associated with, Pink Mammoth. While it lived in our storage container for a majority of the week (unbeknownst to me) I was able to take it out and have some playtime with it on the last Saturday. Turns out the structure of the art around the Sybian itself decreases the resonant frequency of the very powerful servo to one that is nearly exactly similar to the human body. Needless to say, it creates a very intense bodily sensation for man and women a like. Very much looking forward to bringing it back after some personal modifications as a gift to playa next year. The suspense... literally - you'll see!

This year leading up to BM I was very wrapped up in a large-scale art project, The Journey. The story behind that certainly deserves its own post... that to come... but back to The Colonel device...

I'm currently looking for more events and communities that would be receptive to Colonel Angus and his loving vibrations and edgy (yet approachable) demeanor. If you happen to know of any please reach out.

Cheers,
Ray

Foss' Alchemy

Here's a link to give the album a listen.

If you are into vocals and cheesy bass-lines this album is for you. In fact it I can even see it being the album that turns on 'the masses' to such sounds. Actually I feel like that's what is already what top 40 is about? Not sure.

Over the last few years Lee has done an amazing job etching his way into the hearts, minds, and ears of the underground music community. This is in part to his legendary 6+ hours burning man sets, charisma behind the decks, impeccable selector skills, and partly due to his caveman pre-civilization appearance. Maybe not so much the last one.

His sets have an air about them that has people grooving with grins on their faces. And when thinking of his music selection and singles I actually didn't see such a poppy album coming from him - but the signs were there. With singles released leading up to the album that included: Congo Dance, Living in the City, The Gift, and Alchemy if it was anyone but Lee I would be half through a rant about how much he has sold out. Listen to Alchemy - one note from a something that would be playing on your 14 year old niece's kid bop album. Think Hot Natured. And this is coming from an artist that I've said on multiple occasions has been one note from turning is set from hyphy house to insufferable trap. Well I guess that's actually something impressive...

He clearly had a vision for this album. His musical tendencies have leaned this way for years. I'm not sure if I was blind to it or refused to acknowledge because they're not in line with mine. Either way there's a lesson to be had in there somewhere.

Not a album for me but he nailed it in someone's eyes - so bonus points for that. Give a listen to Laserdance or Till the Light if you want to hear the sounds I wish he made more of.

Where this came from...

I dislike a lot of things. Safe to say most ideas, images, thoughts, tones, and above all: tunes.

However the stuff do like I really really enjoy, get behind, dive head first into, rave about and, if appropriate, attempt to do the no pants dance with.

But for now I'll keep this website more about how I feel about all things musical - the atmosphere it creates, emotions it may stir, and the memories it sears. All the stuff here will come from a heavy electronic slate but lest I forget about the occasional jazz releases or old time favorites that I recently wiped the dust off of and put a needle to.
